Pet-Safe Bathroom Cleaning: What Products Are Safe for Dogs and Cats?
Many bathroom cleaners contain ingredients toxic to pets. Here's what to use (and avoid) for a pet-safe cleaning routine.
Pet-Safe Bathroom Cleaning: What's Safe for Dogs and Cats?
Pets drink from toilet bowls. They lick bathroom floors. They sniff every surface. If you share your home with a dog or cat, what you clean with matters.
Ingredients to Avoid
Bleach (Sodium Hypochlorite) — Toxic if ingested, causes respiratory irritation
Quaternary Ammonium Compounds (Quats) — Found in many disinfectant sprays, can cause chemical burns on paw pads
Phenols (Lysol, Pine-Sol) — Highly toxic to cats (absorbed through skin)
Essential Oils (Tea Tree, Citrus, Pine) — Concentrated oils are toxic to cats and dogs
Pet-Safe Cleaning Routine
Daily
- Close the toilet lid
- Wipe seat and lid with a pet-safe disinfecting wipe
